Anyone else been watching Scandal? I have.
There's one big pitfall: affairs are melodramatic and dead end. If you make the rooting couple the one that's having the affair and put it in the context of the a situation where one involved party literally cannot get a divorce, how can the rooting couple's relationship grow? Answer: It can't.
...except for maybe sideways.
But the show is pretty good about avoiding the dead end affair pitfalls. Mostly they do it with a case of the week, slight of hand. Ratchet up some tension, raise some stakes, and present a highly controlled, intensely dramatic fast moving show and no one will notice. (Calling up your boyfriend the Prez as Deus Ex Machina for a solution at the end was getting old though. Glad they seemed to sorta nip that one in the bud.)
It helps that they seem to be working with a shortened amount of episodes from a usual tv season and can stick to plot and nothing but instead of having to resort to filler. They're telling their story. Which is great. I'm curious what they're ultimate goal is concerning pay off however. How long do they need the show to run to tell their story? Im not so much concerned that they won't get the time they need but that their slight of hand won't be sustainable at their current rate of motion.
But I digress. I really posted this because I wante to get out the ludicrous plot bunny that hit me while I was watching tonight so it doesn't keep gnawing at me and I don't have to write it.
Because affairs are just no fun and Melly is willing to work with Olivia and also crazy and sympathetic. What if... Melly had originally know Olivia from way back. What if Melly and Liv'd had a thing and Melly was the one to nudge Cyrus into bringing Olivia into the campaign? How awesome would it be if Olivia then fell for the president? Sure having a woman in love with a married man is fun Story but why not have a woman torn between loving two different people? ...who just happen to be married to each other. It's the ultimate triangle and there's nothing soaps love more. ;)
