[livejournal.com profile] shadadukal asked:

1. Who is your favorite character in Star Wars and why?

Um...tough choice.  The obvious answer is Jaina Solo.  And I really do love Jaina. Particularly through the YJK and the NJO eras.  After that I think that Jaina got pushed to the back a little.  Her character was sort of discarded and just brought back when it was convenient.  The back and forth with Jag and Zekk I think they played with that too long, until it sort of started to hurt Jaina as a character.  I don't care if she wasn't with Jag, but Mara made the point that Jaina was acting like a teenager about it and she was.  I think it would have been more true to the character...well I think she'd already grown past that.

Then there's Mara. I think Mara would have to be my absolute favorite.  She was bad...sorta and then she was good. But when she was good she never lost that essential part of herself into being a Jedi like I think Luke did. Fett said that Jaina couldn't understand because she was a Jedi and automatically lost some of that innate humanity, but I think that Mara would have still gotten it too or maybe more completely than Jaina even. So yeah...much love for Mara there too.

2. Why do you like femslash?

Because girls are hot with other girls? It feels like a shallow answer and I guess it is, but it is kinda true also.  I guess I always liked to see more in depth relationships between women in fics, especially fan fiction and femslash does that a lot.  I think in a lot of ways femslash isn't just about romance between women, although it is, but it can also just be about the way that women relate to women without having it center on men, and I think that's an area that doesn't get explored enough in more general types of fan fiction.

3. If you could live anywhere you liked in the world, without money being an issue, where would you go?

NYC, baby. I've always said that I'd love to live there for a couple of years.  Not very long. I think the small spaces, the crush of people and the fast pace would get to me eventually but I'd love to live there for a few years just for the opportunity.  The cultures, the choices, the freedom. It's not the right word, but in a city like that you don't have to worry so much about being confined by small town values.  True, you don't have the small town benefits where everyone knows you and cares about you, but at the same time everyone doesn't know you and get all up in your shit all the time! Bonus! So yeah, NYC.

4. What's your dream job? ;)

Job? I'm supposed to dream about earning a living? :p I joke.  But...um...writer maybe? I don't know. I liked jobs that keep me very phyisically active.  I thought about being a flight attendant once.

5. This is one that
[personal profile] aruna7 asked me and I thought it was pretty cool. If you could live the rest of your life with a character, who would you choose and why?

Ashley Davies from South of Nowhere.  Okay, I know that sounds random, but...these crazy characters that are in all kinds of life threatening situations sound cool and all, but to actually live with them, I'd want someone saner and in less of a life endangering thing.  Ash is quite hot, enough of a bad girl not to be boring, but not too crazy either mostly.  And very sweet and funny in her own way. So...yeah.

Yeah, I wanna shout at the EU writers and plotters: "Enough with the Zekk/Jaina/Jag triangle already". Seriously, storywise, it's been going on for over a decade. *rolls eyes*

I asked about the femslash because, although I have a lot of slashers on my Flist, you're probably the only one that favors femslash. I have no preference either way between het, slash or femslash (all right, maybe a tiny little one towards het :P). Very interesting answer you gave about women relating to other women though.

[identity profile] jaina47.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Listen, at this point I don't care if it's J/J or just Jaina/no one. Or I even have a few femslashy ideas that wouldn't make it in canon. I just want them to stop totally messing up her character for the sake of a plot line that you can't have any other way.

You know, male slash just never really did it for me. I know a lot of women that are incredibly turned on by the idea of guy on guy. But for me I guess it's the fantasy that you could be appealing to the character in question, and m/m slash is by definition exclusive because it's guy only. Even if it's not realistic there's always that potential in het or femslash. So...while I don't dislike it and I'll even read some of it if it's a good story in its own right, m/m doesn't really have anything that attracts me.

Also I kinda like girls. So while I didn't really consciously realize that until after I got into femslash it probably has a not small amount to do with it.

I get the feelings the writers just don't know what to do with Jaina. I'd be quite happy see her single as well and be the Sword of the Jedi. They have sort of put her character back on track at the end of LotF. I hope they continue. And she should be promoted to Master as she has shown maturity and control in "Invincible". And Leia should be as well IMO.

I like male slash when I feel that something in canon could actually lead to that. I dislike male slash that is just written for its own sake. But yeah, I'd rather go for het. As for femslash, I just don't see a lof of it in the fandoms I'm it. But I like it.

For me most m/m is dreadfully boring and the guys in them are redicilously effeminate (ffs!). Making them interesting and complex characters who just happen to fall for each other goes a long way of making me actually pay attention. Put them in a good story and it's great.

I can see the possibility of greatness in m/m sadly I just haven't found a single one that would be interesting enough to keep me entertained.

Some books exist out there but my local bookstore... no. Just nothing. But can't really order from Amazon if I don't know what I'm getting.

I'd love to find some slash that had the same level of sheer quality as Fingersmith for femslash.

(Or Ivy/Rachel, Phédre/Melisande, etc...)

For me I kinda accidentally found femslash through Kim's books. (Heh, what irony that :P)

I don't get much of the rest of femslash either. Seems that they just pick two gorgeous women from some TV series and then try to put them together. Doesn't much work for me that either. (Except bleighton). Well I loved Xena when it first started airing, but after the series already had ended and I found that Gabrielle/Xena was near canon I went huh? wot? Just shows how thick I'm sometimes :)

Only thing that works is the complexity and believabality(am not native speaker). The characters have to actually be believabally(wot?) feeling the feelings and processing them.

Ok, I think that's enough ranting for today.

I think in a lot of ways femslash isn't just about romance between women, although it is, but it can also just be about the way that women relate to women without having it center on men, and I think that's an area that doesn't get explored enough in more general types of fan fiction.

It doesnt get explored in more general types of ANY fiction, and you are totally correct. I don't know what it is about (and I'm generalizing here a bit) straight women that OMG THEY CAN'T HAVE OTHER WOMEN AROUND CUZ ZOMGBITCHES! But its stupid. All of my meaningful relationships (and I in no way mean romantic) have been with other women. And most were long before I understood I was gay.

[identity profile] jaina47.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
You know though sometimes I think it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Like a women will go into a situation expecting ZOMGBITCHES! and she'll be kind of defensive because of it and then everyone else reads the defensive as bitchery and jumps back in with claws extended and it all goes to hell in a handbasket. And if everyone just kind of mellowed out before they went into it, it would all work out a lot better.

On another fandom related note, I just finished another part of Let Sleeping Vamps Lie. Want a look?
